Lone Star Tavern was first open in the early 60’s by Charlie and Irene. Which was filled with beer and pool tables. Lone Star Tavern was the place to have an ice cold beer and relax after a long day at work. Charlie was a cook in the navy before he and Irene opened Lone Star Tavern and one night he started cooking. Charlie and Irene were also in the cattle business so it’s no wonder they decided to cook steaks as their primary meal. Back in the day this place used to be an old house. Customers come in and tell us how they used to duck walking through the doorway and eat on a pool table or standing up. Business was booming, there was nothing like Lone Star in the Waco area at that time. People would stand outside waiting to come in, not only for the ice cold beer but the awesome steaks. Shortly after this awesome new restaurant that Wacoans and people from surrounding cities have grown accustom to burn to the ground.
Thankfully it was rebuilt in 1972 and is the same building that you see today. You’ll notice walking up from the date carved and the pennies cemented in the concrete on the front porch that this is one of the oldest restaurants around, which was then created as Lone Star Tavern and Steakhouse!
Since then Lone Star has changed hands a couple of times but one thing that has stayed the same is the preparation and cooking of our steaks. Our Steaks are all cooked on a flat top grill and seasoned with a careful blend of secret seasonings. Cooking on a flat top not only cooks the steak evenly without burning it, it cooks it in its own juices. We top it while it’s cooking in our homemade au jus and tenderize to perfection.
Now owned and operated by Scott Studer and Josh Hale it has transformed from a bar to more of a family steakhouse with a wide range of steak, chicken, fish and salad options. We still offer the coldest beer in town and have a wide range wine and wine-a-rita options. In addition to the restaurant Lone Star Tavern and Steakhouse now offers custom catering.
Here is an old commercial from the 60's or 70's that shows some of our history. NOTE: The prices in the video are NOT our current pricing.
